What is the Met Gala?
Often referred to as "Fashion's Biggest Night Out," the Met Gala began in 1948 as a fundraising event for the Costume Institute, the fashion department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event is held in New York City on the first Monday of every May (May 4, 2026).

Each year, attendees wear elaborate outfits based on a theme connected to a new museum exhibit. This year, the theme for the exhibition was "Costume Art".
Controversy? Why?
The most common criticism surrounding the Met Gala is extreme wealth inequality. Tickets cost tens of thousands of dollars, while tables cost hundreds of thousands. Some critics argue that this lavish event feels insensitive when many ordinary people struggle with inflation and ongoing economic instability.
Another common criticism concerns the portrayal of billionaires. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos were heavily involved this year. Critics argue that billionaires and corporations facing public controversy should not be celebrated. The Gala provides an opportunity to improve their public image and can resemble an exclusive networking event rather than a genuine celebration of fashion.
"Hunger Games" Comparisons
Online, some have compared the Met Gala to the Capitol from The Hunger Games. In The Hunger Games, wealthy elites in the Capitol wear extravagant clothing and live in luxury, while those who live in the districts suffer. In the eyes of many, this event symbolises a growing separation between wealthy elites and ordinary society.
But in Defense...
Supporters argue that critics often overlook the artistic side of the Met Gala. The Gala gives fashion designers an opportunity to express ideas through haute couture. Many view fashion as no different from other art forms, such as painting or sculpture.
The Costume Institute must also fund itself. Money raised through the Met Gala helps fund exhibitions and research into historic garments. Without these donations, maintaining one of the world's largest fashion collections would be much more difficult.
