As AI demand grows, so does demand for AI data centers — and memory chips are a key element in those data centers. Memory chips determine how fast servers can process information.

Memory chips are also an essential part of gadgets like laptops, phones, tablets, and gaming consoles. So with the rise of AI, there's a shortage of memory chips. Hence, companies have to buy the chips at a high cost, which leads to higher manufacturing costs and thus a higher selling price.

The demand for memory chips doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon either.

"Price rises and memory shortages are likely to continue through 2027" — a top semiconductor industry CEO told CNBC.

The most notable price hike is Apple

On June 25th, Apple took its website down, and when the website was back up, new prices were already on display. The price increase in Thailand ranged from 12%-58%.

Apple cited the huge increase as due to rising cost of memory and storage chips.

Apple isn't the only company increasing its prices

Effective August 1st:

  • The Xbox 512GB price will increase by US$100
  • The Xbox 1TB price will increase by US$150

In their official statement, Microsoft said: "Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027. The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles."
